New TEER Categories for your NOC Occupation Information

NOC 2021 – Goodbye Occupation Type & Levels, Hello TEER Categories
The National Occupational Classification – or NOC – was updated in late 2021. The skill type and levels from NOC 2016 have been replaced in NOC 2021 by a new classification system called TEER (Training, Education, Experience, & Responsibilities) with 6 categories. Here’s how it compares to the previous NOC 2016 classification system:

To see what each TEER Category involves, let’s now match the required education and experience from the 2016 system with the new TEER Categories:

You may notice that the Skill Level B has been replaced by two TEER categories, 2 & 3, producing an extra category in NOC 2021.
Why does this change matter?
As of November 16, 2022, you will have to start using these new TEER categories when submitting your profile to Express Entry, as well as for other programs like Provincial Nomination Programs, Caregiver programs, and Atlantic Immigration programs, for example.
Let’s walk through how to find your new TEER category when submitting your profile at Express Entry:
Go to the following IRCC page and scroll down until you see the following:
- Write your job title in the Field items box shown above and the table will change to show the closest NOC occupations.
For example, if you write Sales, the following results will show up:
Let’s say the closest match to your job is the NOC unit group Financial Sales Representatives. Note down your TEER Category (TEER 3) and your NOC Code (63102).
- Next, go to the NOC website here to find your specific job title and occupation’s responsibilities. Make sure that you select NOC 2021 Version 1.0 as shown below:
Note that we’ve entered the NOC Code from above (63102), so when we click the blue Search button this is the result:
The highlighted sections show the basic job description of occupations in this unit group as well as typical job titles. Scroll down to just below and you’ll find the main duties listed which should match up fairly closely with some (not necessarily all) the duties you have in your current occupation:
This list of duties is also useful if you can’t find a match at the above IRCC page. In case you can’t find a match there, go to the NOC website we also linked above, and find the closest job title to yours and compare the listed duties to see if they match your duties in your current job. Once you’ve found an occupation with similar duties, write down the NOC occupational code and the TEER category, as well as the job title. Keep these for when you submit your profile at Express Entry.
Let’s now look at cases where you may have already submitted a profile at Express Entry by November 16, 2022:
Have you got your ITA yet?
If you plan to submit your profile to Express Entry on or after November 16, 2022, then you should go to the NOC website and find the nearest match as we show you above. Enter you 5-digit occupation code and your TEER Category when filling out your profile.
If you’ve already submitted your profile at Express Entry but haven’t yet received your Invitation to Apply, or ITA, by November 16, 2022, then go through the above steps at the IRCC page or the NOC website to find your TEER category and occupation code and use them to update your profile at Express Entry.
If you’ve already received your ITA, then submit your application for permanent residence using the old NOC 2016 type & levels to describe your occupation.
How do TEER Categories affect the Eligibility Criteria at Express Entry?
Let’s pull together the new TEER Categories and the requirements for eligibility at Express Entry. Here’s a table summing up the basics for all 3 streams within Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program):

How About Selection Criteria & CRS Points?
Please note that both the Selection Criteria and the Comprehensive Ranking System at Express Entry will use the chart at the beginning of our blog to award selection and ranking points.
For example, for arranged employment in the previous type/levels 0, A, or B you got 50 points. Under the new system you get 50 points for arranged employment in TEER Categories 0, 1, 2, or 3. The same holds true for selection points for arranged employment in type/level 0, A, or B. Under TEER you get 10 points as before for arranged employment under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 categories.
